Cambodia is a highly rural and agrarian society. Majority of its population, about 79%, reside in the rural areas where poverty remains high. The proposed Project aims to restore the quality and condition of the deteriorated rural road network in selected provinces in Cambodia by supporting the reconstruction and enhancing the climate resiliency of damaged rural roads. Subject to a detailed feasibility study, the Project will rehabilitate 600 km of rural roads which were affected by flood damage in the six provinces of Kampong Thom, Siem Reap, Banteay Meanchey, Battambang, Pursat and Kampong Chhnang to improve accessibility to markets and services and support post-COVID-19 economic recovery.
The Project Preparation Special Fund (PPSF) grant will be used to conduct preparatory activities to help prioritize investments, ensure implementation readiness, and enhance the quality of the proposed investment. More specifically, the PPSF grant will support the preparation of a feasibility study, detailed engineering designs, and other critical studies/documents to enhance the project’s implementation readiness.
The PPSF grant will be primarily implemented by the Ministry of Rural Development of Cambodia. Of the total PPSF grant of USD4.5 million, USD0.2 million will be executed directly by AIIB for start-up preparatory activities.
