Anu P MATHAI (India)

Anu P. Mathai has been on the AIIB Board of Directors since September 2025. A career civil servant with nearly 30 years of experience, she has held various positions with the Government of India since 1995.

She is currently Additional Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, Government of India, in charge of the Other Multilateral Institutions and International Economic Relations divisions. She headed the policy team and coordinated preparations for India’s G20 Finance Track team during India’s G20 presidency in 2023. She heads the unit that represents India in the G20 International Financial Architecture Working Group and the G20 Framework Working Group. She also handles matters related to BRICS, G7, G-24, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, Global Sovereign Debt Roundtable, Paris Pact for People and the Planet, and the Voice of Global South Summit.

Additionally, she oversees externally aided projects, policy, and governance matters related to international financial institutions such as AIIB, New Development Bank (NDB), International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, African Development Bank, and the OPEC Fund for International Development. Currently, she is Alternate Governor at IFAD, Director on the NDB Board, and Governing Council Member of the Africa Digital Financial Inclusion Facility.

She has over a decade of experience in trade policy, including handling agriculture negotiations at the World Trade Organization (WTO) and matters relating to Ministerial Conferences of the WTO, the WTO Trade Negotiations Committee, and the WTO General Council. She represented India in the G20 Trade and Investment Working Group. She has also served as Chief Executive Officer of the India Brand Equity Foundation. In addition, she has extensive experience in capital markets and pension reforms.

She holds a master’s degree in economics from the Delhi School of Economics and an M.Phil. in economics from Panjab University. She also has an MBA from Swinburne University of Technology, Australia.
