Rapid urbanization and high economic growth are posing immense challenges in waste management in Bangladesh. The proposed investment project aims to improve Solid Waste Management (SWM) services in selected municipalities in Bangladesh. Specifically, the investment project will: (i) improve public health and quality of life by reducing exposure to pollutants and disease vectors associated with solid waste; (ii) strengthen the government’s capacity to plan for and implement effective waste management services; and (iii) improve SWM practices in the country, encouraging waste minimization, recycling, and segregation at source.
The purpose of this Special Fund grant is to conduct preparatory activities to help prioritize sub-projects within target municipalities, finalize important design features, and ensure implementation readiness of the project. Preparatory activities supported by the Special Fund grant include preparation of: (i) detailed feasibility studies; (ii) engineering design and cost estimates for the investment sub-projects; (iii) social and environmental safeguards documents; (iv) contract packages including tender documents and procurement plan; and, (v) assessment of institutional and financial management capacity of the executing agency and project implementation units. The grant will also provide support to the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED), executing agency for this grant, to prepare all project reports and necessary preparatory works associated with the project.
